This unit explores how people grow and develop throughout their lives, from birth to old age. It examines the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social (PIES) changes that occur at different life stages—infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and later adulthood.

This unit introduces learners to the range of health and social care services available in the UK, and the core values that underpin high-quality care.

Students will explore how different services support individuals across various age groups and needs, including those with physical, emotional, or social challenges. They will learn about both statutory (e.g. NHS, social services) and non-statutory (e.g. charities, private care) providers, and how people access these services.

Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being in which disease and infirmity are absent. A variety of definitions have been used for different purposes over time. Health can be promoted by encouraging healthy activities, such as regular physical exercise, and by reducing or avoiding unhealthy activities or situations, such as smoking or excessive stress.  We will go through important topics in this unit.

End of Life Care refers to the support and medical care given during the final stages of life. It focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life rather than curing illness. This care includes managing pain, addressing emotional and spiritual needs, supporting families, and ensuring the individual’s wishes are respected.
